Model Essentials for the True Fashion Professional✨

Whether you’re just starting out in the modeling industry or you’re already a pro, nailing model professionalism and etiquette is key to making a lasting impression. Let’s dive into some tips to help you shine both on and off the runway.

Be Punctual

We get it – life happens. Traffic can be a nightmare, your alarm might betray you, or maybe you just needed that extra five minutes of beauty sleep that turned into twenty. But in the modeling and fashion industry, showing up on time is everything. The old saying “fashionably late” does not apply here. Being punctual shows respect for everyone’s time and keeps things running smoothly. Imagine the whole team waiting for you like Carrie Bradshaw in that scene in Sex and the City….. Awkward, right?

Pro tip: aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early. This gives you time to settle in, find the location, and maybe even grab a quick, quick snack to start the day right.

Bring the Essentials

Picture this: you finally arrive at the fashion show late because you didn’t follow step one in this blog post. Not only are you late, but you forgot to bring your model bag with everything you needed. Avoid this by always coming prepared. Pack your model bag with the essentials: your portfolio, undergarments, a few pairs of heels, hygiene products (because you never know), and some basic makeup for touch ups. If you need more ideas on what to pack in your model bag, see our series “What’s in our Bag?” with model coaches, Chaudralyn Bell and Tre Davis for our Model Mastery Program.

Stay Professional, Stay Positive

A positive attitude can make or break a show or a shoot. Ever been working with someone who is a total debbie-downer? It’s no fun. Be friendly, approachable, and willing to take direction. Remember, every opportunity is a collaboration. Directors, photographers, and stylists are there to help you look your best, so let’s keep the vibe positive and professional. If something’s not working for you, communicate it calmly and clearly– no diva fits needed!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T the Team

The fashion industry is small, and word gets around quickly. Treat everyone with respect, from the makeup artist to the photographers. A little kindness goes a long way and can lead to more bookings and great references. Remember their names, thank them for their hard work, and acknowledge their contributions. Everyone on set plays a vital role in making the magic happen.

Keep It Clean!

From your appearance down to the space around you, cleanliness matters. Arrive with clean hair, nails, and skin. This does not mean that you have to be overly made-up; natural and fresh is often best for casting calls and initial meetings. Afterwards, make sure you tidy up your area. It shows that you respect the space and the team’s hard work. This small act of consideration can leave a lasting positive impression.

Mind Your Media

In today’s digital age, your social media is your brand. Keep it professional, but don’t be afraid to let your personality shine. Share behind-the-scenes snaps, tag the team, and always credit the photographer, makeup artist, and stylist. It’s a great way to show appreciation and build your network. Remember, potential clients and collaborators will check out your online presence, so keep it cute and classy!

Communication is Key

If you have questions or need clarification, don’t hesitate to ask. Clear communication helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone is on the same page. If you’re unsure about something, it’s better to ask than guess. This applies to everything from call times to outfit details. Being proactive in your communication shows you’re attentive and serious about your work.

Take Care of Yourself

Long hours, heavy makeup, and constant travel can take a toll. The life of a model is glamorous yet demanding. Prioritize your health by staying hydrated, eating well, and getting enough rest. Skincare is crucial– cleanse thoroughly after shows or shoots to remove makeup. A healthy model is a happy model, and your energy will translate into better photos and a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Modeling isn’t just about striking a pose or walking a runway. It’s about being professional, respectful, and genuinely enjoyable to work with. By following these tips, you’ll not only enhance your reputation but also make every opportunity a memorable experience.

So cheers to rocking every fashion show, photoshoot, and more; making connections, and always showing the world your best self.

With love,

The Platinum22 Team
